How betting odds work

Odds show how much a winning bet pays out, and reflect the probability a sportsbook assigns to an outcome. There are three common formats:

  • Decimal odds (common in Europe and most of the world): stake × odds = total payout. Odds of 2.50 on a $10 stake pay $25 (stake included).
  • Fractional odds (common in the UK): e.g. 5/1 means you win 5 units for every unit staked, plus your stake back.
  • American odds (moneyline): a negative number (e.g. −150) shows how much you must stake to win 100; a positive number (e.g. +150) shows how much you win on a 100 stake.

Implied probability can be calculated from decimal odds: 1 ÷ odds × 100%. The lower the odds, the higher the probability the sportsbook assigns to that outcome.

Common bet types

Single bet
A wager on one event — the simplest form of bet.
Accumulator / parlay
Multiple single bets combined into one; every selection must win, and the total odds multiply together.
Handicap
A virtual advantage or disadvantage is applied to one team to balance the odds (e.g. Asian handicap).
Over/Under
A bet on whether a total (e.g. goals scored) finishes above or below a set line.
Live betting
Bets placed while a match is in progress, with odds that update in real time.
